Description
Late August Summer storms have turned the Santa Cruz River Valley green. On August 29th, 2015, I was traveling back to Vail from the Tubac Center of the Arts and saw Elephant Head of the Santa Rita Mountains as it was illuminated by the sun. The combination of rain darkening the mountains, the sun shining on Elephant Head, and the green grasslands made for a wonderful scene that provided motivation for this painting. Each time I drove to Tubac from my home in Vail was such a beautiful drive as I pass through the retirement community of Green Valley that is appropriately named and then on to the artist community of Tubac. Elephant Head towers over 2,400 feet above the valley. It has become some what of a shrine as hikers and rock climbers have left various types of elephant toys and statues at the summit. Mt Wrightson is the highest peak of the Santa Ritas at an elevation of 9,456 feet. To the right of it one can see the observatory on top of Mt Hopkins. Madera Canyon is a popular camping site for picnics and there are several trail heads for hiking trails. This is the first painting that I was struggling to name and mentioned that fact to Karin Topping, the Executive Director for the Tubac Center of the Arts. She suggested SANTA CRUZ SENTINEL. Great idea, I thought, so it shall be!

Awww, thank you so much, Amy. I was trying to capture the mood of Green Valley. I guess that’s why folks retire there.
