Description
August in Arizona means summer monsoon storms. I had always enjoyed experiencing these storms while at the Grand Canyon. So after checking out the weather forecasts, Janet and I booked accommodations there. I was a bit disappointed on Tuesday and Wednesday, as there were some clouds, but no storms. Storms over and around the Grand Canyon are incredible. So on Thursday, August 24, we got up early to see a sunrise. Once again a measure of disappointment as a layer of clouds on the east horizon blocked the sun’s rays from lighting up the clouds. It was very crowded at Mather Point, as other folks had the same hope of capturing the sunrise. When that did not happen, most people left. Fortunately, we stuck around for awhile, as there was a small storm to the west. I am glad we did.
As the sun rose high enough, 15 minutes later above the clouds, it illuminated our view of the canyon in a spectacular way. Here we have a view of Isis Temple and Cheops Pyramid, as the sun just starts to light them, and you can see all the way down to the Bright Angel Trail, as it goes to Plateau Point. Way below that, the Colorado River and the cottonwood trees at Phantom Ranch. The little storm quickly grew into one that spread 180 degrees around us. The result is what you see here. Dark shadows giving way to honey, golden hued light on the lower plateaus. The light and shadows, changing so quickly. So much to view in every direction, that we were constantly looking, and Janet was making photographs as fast as she could.
This is one scene, that would be impossible to paint on site, en plein air, because of the rapidly changing light and rain, every second. So a studio painting was in order. A large one at that. Since it was the greatest dawn we had ever experienced, I named this, “Transcendent Golden Dawn.” Transcendent can mean a sense of the Divine. But it can also mean, something that transcends or rises above all others. Something, that surpasses the ordinary, exceptional, incomparable, matchless, unrivaled.
For us, this experience during dawn at Grand Canyon, was just that. Five weeks of work resulted in this painting. My most epic Grand Canyon work, to date.

I'm sure I've commented on this one before, but it's a FAVORITE! The way you've captured that dramatic, fleeting moment between Storm and Sun is nothing short of AMAZING!!!
Jerry Bokowski replied:
We were spellbound that morning, Danielle! Must have taken a few hundred photos for reference possibilities. The golden early morning light against the slate gray shadows and sky were a real challenge as well as all the countless features. Thank you so much for sharing your impressions on this with me!

Wow! Jerry this is a masterpiece. The amazing contrast, dramatic weather, color, fantastic detail in the landscape.. how have I just now stumbled upon this? You've taken the Grand Canyon and made it look the best I think I've ever seen it portrayed with the brush.
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Since this was such a special morning for Janet and I, I was motivated to paint it. Now, looking at this huge painting on our living room wall, transports us back to that incredible morning. It’s like looking out a window at the Canyon. Thank you very much, Chance.
