Wow! Thank you for bringing this forth to your 1st page and the 1st image, as I missed seeing this one in your archives. This is an incredible painting that lets the viewers see just how tall Angels Landing and the Scout Lookout area is! I can hear Butch and the Kid talking and the horse's shoes splashing as they walk through the water. And I also hear a cowboy song playing! How wonderful and exciting that Robert Redford owns this painting. Now I feel like watching that movie again! It's been awhile. Just as it's been awhile since I've been here. But oh what a delight each time I visit your sight! L/L

Jerry Bokowski replied:

Sundance said, “You just keep think’n Butch, cause that’s what you’re good at”...In April of 2017, we took our special guest Eva Maria from Macedonia to the very spot that this scene was filmed, Deborah. Thank you so much for sharing your impressions of this with me! I always enjoy hearing from you!

CONGRATULATIONS JERRY...JULY 2020 FAA TONY AWARD WINNER!! This is one of my favorites of your Desert beauties! It boasts DRAMA, HISTORY, CELEBRITY and BEAUTY in GRAND SCALE! Underpinning all of your work is a CONSISTENT emotive respect for the deep contrasts of Light and Shadow as well as earthen colours set against emboldened, dramatic skies!! Enjoy this award...so well deserved! LF

Jerry Bokowski replied:

I hope it contributes to the Sundance Foundation that Robert Redford built to preserve the land and discover new great artists in film making. Thank you very much, Laurel!

Lane Baxter

Awesome Jerry....One of my favorite paintings you have created...

Jerry Bokowski replied:

Thank you so much, Lane! This painting now lives in Sundance, Utah. It celebrates the 50th anniversary of the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. And it also celebrates the 50th anniversary of Robert Redford buying 5,000 acres of land that he named Sundance! Janet & I have so much admiration for him as an actor, director, producer, and for his Sundance film Institute. 50 years of great, some now classic movies!

Yes, I remember the movie very will. We even had the soundtrack record. My mom and I would listen to it and Tijuana Brass while we did our house work. Haha! Tells how old I am! Well anyway, I really love your work, it touches my soul and I believe it certainly is relevant! How I wish I could personally be in each place! Keep up the great work!!

Jerry Bokowski replied:

One of my best friends in High School was a trumpet player that looked a lot like Herp Albert, of the Tijuana Brass, Debbie. I graduated HS the year this movie came out. That’s how old I am! Thank you very much as always!

One of my most favorite places on earth, and a great movie to tie it all up with even more meaning. All of your paintings of Zion are fabulous, and I mean utterly fabulous and beautiful. This is one of my favorite spots in the park. L/F (And, thanks for the follow! I greatly appreciate it.)

Jerry Bokowski replied:

Thank you so much, Jane. We have hiked to the top of Angels Landing many times. To be down by the river looking up is awesome too! I really appreciate your kind words.

Artist's Description

Many of us have seen the movie, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." This is the scene near the beginning of the film, where Butch and Sundance, ride horseback up a river to cover their tracks. Parts of the movie were filmed in Zion National Park, and this scene was shot at the foot of Angels Landing, along the Virgin River.

In the film, you just could not see how tall Angels Landing and the Scout Lookout area was, in the widescreen format.

So, I decided to do a painting of one of my favorite places to visit, with two of my favorite actors, in one of my favorite classic Western movies.

This painting is now at Sundance Resort, Utah. It celebrates the 50th anniversary of the movie and Robert Redford’s subsequent purchase of the Sundance Resort...The Way They Were!

About Jerry Bokowski

Jerry Bokowski

I have been in awe of the deserts, mountains, and canyons of the great southwest for over 50 years. Atmospheric events like sunrise and sunsets, approaching storms and monsoon rains, fog and mist, snow, or moonlit nights, just add to the beauty of Arizona and Utah landscapes. This is what inspires a passion within me to capture the mood, drama, and majesty of being there....from being at the foot of a majestic crag or on top of a summit overlooking a distant valley below. I paint real places that one can visit and see. Whether it be Finger Rock of the Catalina Mountains,The Sentinel in Zion National Park, or Mather Point at the Grand Canyon, it is my goal and desire to have my paintings draw a viewer to them and that they become...
