Way back in 1992 I was on my way from Tucson to do an art show in Scottsdale Arizona. I was just outside the town of Toltec when I realized that there was gonna be a gorgeous sunrise. So I stopped at a Circle K and bought some film for my trusty Pentax 35 mm camera and took several pictures that would provide reference to one of my most favorite sunrise paintings I have ever done. I chose a panoramic 24 inch by 48 inch canvas, put on some music and tried my best to capture the subtle layers of early morning clouds. Since the clouds played the leading role, I decided to place an Arizona lake in the mid-ground and saguaro silhouettes in the foreground, in order to focus all the attention on the clouds. Sunrise and sunsets can create spectacular moments in time. This is my attempt to capture and share such a moment!
I have been in awe of the deserts, mountains, and canyons of the great southwest for over 50 years. Atmospheric events like sunrise and sunsets, approaching storms and monsoon rains, fog and mist, snow, or moonlit nights, just add to the beauty of Arizona and Utah landscapes. This is what inspires a passion within me to capture the mood, drama, and majesty of being there....from being at the foot of a majestic crag or on top of a summit overlooking a distant valley below. I paint real places that one can visit and see. Whether it be Finger Rock of the Catalina Mountains,The Sentinel in Zion National Park, or Mather Point at the Grand Canyon, it is my goal and desire to have my paintings draw a viewer to them and that they become...

Oh wow, Jerry! This atmospheric glow you have somehow wonderfully painted is among my favorite effects in nature. The muted tones in the sunrise really focus the attention to the peaks and Apache Lake and the dark saguaro silhouettes are just perfectly done. Awesome!!
