This is a painting conveys the emotion of what a Stagecoach Driver may have experienced when trying to outrun a summer monsoon storm. The setting is within a mile or so of where I used to live in 1978. Lighting strikes near the base of Thimble Peak. It is pouring in upper Sabino Canyon and high winds are blowing rain over Saddleback Mountain and into Bear Canyon just a couple of miles away from the trail. The Saguaro skeleton in the foreground is the result of a lightning strike a while back, and Jake is a little nervous, and so are the horses. Stress in the old west...just think of what people of that day had to deal with. Soon that dry wash will be in flash flood stage so it it is full speed ahead to Fort Lowell*
* This is just a tall tale as Stage Lines most likely did not run this far east in the late 1800s Tucson...just a little artistic license!
I have been in awe of the deserts, mountains, and canyons of the great southwest for over 50 years. Atmospheric events like sunrise and sunsets, approaching storms and monsoon rains, fog and mist, snow, or moonlit nights, just add to the beauty of Arizona and Utah landscapes. This is what inspires a passion within me to capture the mood, drama, and majesty of being there....from being at the foot of a majestic crag or on top of a summit overlooking a distant valley below. I paint real places that one can visit and see. Whether it be Finger Rock of the Catalina Mountains,The Sentinel in Zion National Park, or Mather Point at the Grand Canyon, it is my goal and desire to have my paintings draw a viewer to them and that they become...
