On December 12, 2016, Janet and I were at this very spot at the Grand Canyon. It is near Mather Point along the south rim. It was a beautiful mid morning view of the distant Vishnu Temple and Wotans Throne. Wind blown scattered clouds made for ever changing light on the canyon walls. The Kaibab Trail winds its way down to the burnt sienna hued O Neils Butte 3 miles from the rim trail head. Another 4 miles down the trail is the Colorado River.
It was from this very area 50 years ago that I saw the Grand Canyon for the first time. It is where many that visit the canyon see it for the first time as well. In any major painting of it I endeavor to include the rocky pine tree studded foreground is if you were standing there. I also want to capture the distant horizon, clouds and sky. By doing this I hope to capture the depth and distance of this incredible place. I hope my love and passion for this awesome landscape shows in my attempts to capture it on canvas!

Atmospheric events like sunrise and sunsets, approaching storms and monsoon rains, fog and mist, snow, or moonlit nights, just add to the beauty of Arizona and Utah landscapes. This is what inspires a passion within me to capture the mood, drama, and majesty of being there....from being at the foot of a majestic crag or on top of a summit overlooking a distant valley below. I paint real places that one can visit and see. You know how I am FASCINATED with rock formations, and your painting says why. Promoting this in Beauty Of Arizona discussion thread, "National Parks, State Parks, and National Monuments of Arizona!" This too is right around where I caught first glimpse of the Grandest canyon on earth.. the second time was just as exciting as the first!
