Yes Jerry, time is so fleeting. Excellent back story behind this and great research, dedication and thought. The mood and scenery here surely captures what Margaret Vail would have dreamed about surrounding herself with. Great work!!

Jerry Bokowski replied:

You should visit there...lots of photo ops. Janet just sold a 40”x60” B&W of a corral fence there. Thanks as always, Chance!

Artist's Description

I have always been fascinated with old abandoned homes, barns, and buildings.
So when I started to learn about the history of Vail, Arizona, I just had to know more about whom the area was named after, Walter L. Vail.

I learned that he founded Empire ranch in August of 1876, along with investors Herbert R. Hislop and John N. Harvey. I now live near the corner of streets named after these two Englishmen. By 1881, Walter Vail had bought out his partners and decided to marry his child hood sweetheart, Margaret Newhall, back in New Jersey. As a wedding present, he built a half hexagon bay window for his bride that looked north to the Empire Gulch lined with Cottonwood trees, and view of the Rincon Mountains, that would be part of her new home.

While visiting the historic ranch site, just north of Sonoita, I could not help but reflect back on the dreams of Margaret Vail. I am sure it is safe to say that she would have dreamed of a front yard like this. Yes, green grass...

About Jerry Bokowski

Jerry Bokowski

Atmospheric events like sunrise and sunsets, approaching storms and monsoon rains, fog and mist, snow, or moonlit nights, just add to the beauty of Arizona and Utah landscapes. This is what inspires a passion within me to capture the mood, drama, and majesty of being there....from being at the foot of a majestic crag or on top of a summit overlooking a distant valley below. I paint real places that one can visit and see. Whether it be Finger Rock of the Catalina Mountains,The Sentinel in Zion National Park, or Mather Point at the Grand Canyon, it is my goal and desire to have my paintings draw a viewer to them and that they become...
