We visited Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park, in the fall of October 2018, in order to obtain new reference photos for future paintings.
We made it a priority to visit Shoshone Point, and looking east we see this view of the famous rock formations named, Angels Gate, book ended by Hewitt and Hawkins Butte. They would be the focal point of my painting.
I also wanted to include the massive rock formation, Newton Butte, seen in the lower left corner. Its pie shaped summit seems to point at Angels Gate. The horizon, starting right to left features the Desert View Cliffs, Vishnu Temple, Wotan's Throne,Thor Temple, Francois Matthes point, and the Ottoman Amphitheater.
I decided to create an approaching storm to add a little atmospheric mood and drama. The colors during late afternoon at the Canyon are incredible.
I wanted to evoke the feeling of being there. From across the room, this painting gives the illusion of looking through a window, at the Grandest C...
I have been in awe of the deserts, mountains, and canyons of the great southwest for over 50 years. Atmospheric events like sunrise and sunsets, approaching storms and monsoon rains, fog and mist, snow, or moonlit nights, just add to the beauty of Arizona and Utah landscapes. This is what inspires a passion within me to capture the mood, drama, and majesty of being there....from being at the foot of a majestic crag or on top of a summit overlooking a distant valley below. I paint real places that one can visit and see. Whether it be Finger Rock of the Catalina Mountains,The Sentinel in Zion National Park, or Mather Point at the Grand Canyon, it is my goal and desire to have my paintings draw a viewer to them and that they become...
