Back in 2008 my family and I were bike riding from the Parus Trail head to the Gateway to the Narrows...about a 14 mile round trip. Along the way we saw some plein air painters working on capturing The Sentinal. This is just a stone's throw away from where my painting of the Sentinel was done down by the Virgin river. This was the day I decided to do a studio painting of the Sentinel in Fall colors....it just took me a few ( 6 ) years to do it as it seemed like a daunting painting to render. It turned out to be one of my personal favorites of all time!
I have been in awe of the deserts, mountains, and canyons of the great southwest for over 50 years. Atmospheric events like sunrise and sunsets, approaching storms and monsoon rains, fog and mist, snow, or moonlit nights, just add to the beauty of Arizona and Utah landscapes. This is what inspires a passion within me to capture the mood, drama, and majesty of being there....from being at the foot of a majestic crag or on top of a summit overlooking a distant valley below. I paint real places that one can visit and see. Whether it be Finger Rock of the Catalina Mountains,The Sentinel in Zion National Park, or Mather Point at the Grand Canyon, it is my goal and desire to have my paintings draw a viewer to them and that they become...

So very interesting to view this photo (placed in your gallery next to your painting of The Sentinel) and read of your inspiration! Sometimes great art takes a long time to come into being —- so glad that you carried that desire through to completion for us to enjoy! LF
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Oh Malanda, you are so right. I always enjoy reading what you have to say. Thank you very much!

~ Even for an Epic Scenery like this, Nature is new every day. It throws at us all the different colors and hues,...shadows and light(s),... bringing our emotion(s) up and high(er),... making our heart(s) soar and sing ))) Every single instant of our presence is a different experience whether we ask for clouds or we may enJoy the clear(est) skies ))) I am a true believer of the Imagination of the Artist which means that it is up to him/her to choose the fragments of the mosaic s~he finds best to take part in his/her creation. That doesn't necessarily includes being right tHere at the spot one wants to depict ))) I always count on your imagination, dear Jerry. Your sense for detail is truly one--of-a-kind,... unique !!! ))) And you know The GRANDiose Canyon and Zion more than any other living being on this LOVEly Planet we call eARTh ))) Keep shining my Dear One ))) Hugs ))) e~
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Painting outdoors in Zion would be a fantastic experience, Eva. For me though, I try my best to observe, take it all in, absorb it, and then when I return home to my studio, paint it with all my heart and soul! Thank you ever so much for sharing your thoughts on this with me. Perhaps next time we go to Zion, I will do some plein air paintings of it!

Such a nice capture, Jerry, being reminded of the memories you had that day. This image also reminded me of the feeling I've been getting lately: I wish that more people in today's world would stop and take time to take in the simple joys of life. I wish that more people would take to the creative arts and connect with nature and our surroundings more. We'd have a less destructive society, I think.
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Priya, I agree with your sweet words 100%. I have enjoyed observing how you interact with other artists and it will be such a benefit to you as you come across so genuine and sincere and I know in my heart YOU are! Jerry

This is the day I decided to do a studio painting of The Sentinel of Zion National Park...it just took me a while to finally do it...6 years in fact....but now it is done and one of my personal favorites of anything I have ever done. ( That is NOT me painting but one of the artists that inspired me...I have to hand it to them as the light and shadows this time of day change by the MINUTE. Great color reference though to do a studio painting later though ) Can you see the challenge?.......P.S. The Virgin Snow painting of Angels landing took me 20 years to paint but it is now a personal Fav as well!
Jeff Swan

Jeff, Thank You....it is a low res pic but I just wanted to show everybody the story behind my painting of The Sentinel in Zion!.....Jerry
