I had been seeing the New Mexico Thistle (Cirsium neomexicanum) also known as Desert Thistle, Lavender Thistle, and Powderpuff Thistle, but not in the color purple. They are native plants of Arizona.
As you drive along the high desert, grassland areas of Sonoita, Arizona, you can see many of these beautiful. but wickedly sharp wildflowers...they are the sharpest thorns on every bit of this....the blossoms, stem, leaves. It was so windy that it was moving all over the place so I tried to hold it still for a picture and got stuck. This flower screams at you to Look but DO NOT touch!!!
I have been in awe of the deserts, mountains, and canyons of the great southwest for over 50 years. Atmospheric events like sunrise and sunsets, approaching storms and monsoon rains, fog and mist, snow, or moonlit nights, just add to the beauty of Arizona and Utah landscapes. This is what inspires a passion within me to capture the mood, drama, and majesty of being there....from being at the foot of a majestic crag or on top of a summit overlooking a distant valley below. I paint real places that one can visit and see. Whether it be Finger Rock of the Catalina Mountains,The Sentinel in Zion National Park, or Mather Point at the Grand Canyon, it is my goal and desire to have my paintings draw a viewer to them and that they become...

Revisiting this lovely wildflower, the New Mexico Thistle. They really catch your attention as you travel along the roads in the high desert and grassland areas. They just beckon you to stop and take a closer look, but not too close, as they are quite stickery. A look but don’t touch moment for sure. Promoting in the art group, “FOR THE LOVE OF FLOWERS” discussion thread. LF and Facebook 💕Janet

My sister sent me pics of a more lavender coloured variety of these same flowers from her garden in California some time ago. SO when I saw this pic, I was like wow...this purple one is even prettier.
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Thank you Renu for sharing your story. I am glad you like this New Mexico Thistle. Native to Arizona.

One of the joys of traveling through Arizona’s high desert and grasslands, are the roadside wildflowers. They are so colorful, but they do send the message of “look but don’t touch.! I have fun capturing them. They can be a challenge as you said, they grow tall and blow in the wind. Nicely photographed under the circumstances. Promoting in Beauty Of Arizona discussion thread. Jerry Bokowski replied:

Wild flowers are made to protect themselves. Look at them but don't mess with them! The fuzziness adds a nice touch to this wild flower photo. f/l
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Very windy day helped with the fuzz so an unintentional special effect! Thank you, Deborah!
T Cole
Very nice shot Jerry! The "soft pink" of this wildflower is very deceiving. L/F
Jerry Bokowski replied:
T.C. thank you so much! I am amazed that these can be found in Europe and all over the States!

The winds have been really strong lately. Hard to keep anything still and when you held this beauty it rewarded you by sticking you :( It looks like it could be a thistle. Those are beautiful but nasty.... Great shot! l/f

Beautiful shot Jerry!! I'm not sure because I don't know if you get them in your part of the world but that flower looks awfully like a thistle! Our national flower of Scotland! They grow wild here and they're that shape, colour and jaggy too....could be? :) l/f
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Thank you so much, Carol For identifying this and teaching me a new adjective too. JAGGY Great word!
