Description
Painting Arizona's Grand Canyon from rim to rim and top to bottom is a daunting challenge that I always dreamed of doing. So last June 19, Janet and I traveled to Grand Canyon National Park, to see if I could get a good photo to use as a reference for a painting. I took almost 200 pictures. After going through all of them, this is the view of the Canyon that captured my heart.
You see, over 35 years ago, Janet and I discovered this view just east of Yavapai Point. Back then, there was no trail. Janet was afraid and somewhat upset with me as I carefully went out and sat on that rocky crag hundreds of feet above the canyon. She snapped a picture of me out there.
I always loved the V shape in the rocky edge of the canyon that leads the eye into the view to the inner plateau, the black granite gorge all the way down to the Colorado River. The river averages 300 feet wide and has many world class white water rapids that can just barely be seen from way up here.A little to the right one can see the Cottonwoods at Phantom Ranch at the beginning of Bright Angel Canyon. Then one can gaze at the distant North Rim as your eye travels up Bright Angel Canyon. Just to the left of the center tree, Plateau Point can be seen and at times the mule train as they transport folks to the bottom of the canyon.
I decided to do this painting as the canyon would look during a misty, mid morning rainy day. I love weather and the way it adds emotion and mood. Now, viewing this painting from 6 feet away, I feel as I am standing here in the spot we discovered together years ago.
I hope this painting inspires a visit or enhances memories of past trips for all that see it. I love this awesome place!

Jerry, this is utterly amazing and almost magical. At first glance I would have sworn this was a photo. Your talent defies description. All I can say is "WOW" because I am at a loss for words. L/F Did I say, "WOW?"
Jerry Bokowski replied:
When I finally decided to paint the Canyon, it had to be a view point I had a passion for. So I chose a place Janet & I discovered 40 years ago. 5 weeks of work went into this and it led to 20 more Grand Canyon paintings. Thank you so much, Jane! It is always great to hear from you.
