In 2018, Janet and I visited Grand Canyon National Park, South Rim. Our purpose was to visit Shoshone Point, and capture the incredible views from there between mid-afternoon to golden hour. I knew when I saw this scenic view that I wanted to paint it. One of my most challenging paintings ever, but when you have a passion for this place at this time of day, well it is very motivating. It is an expanded version of a large painting I did called, “Approaching Shoshone” done during a golden hour storm.
This view offers the rugged Kaibab Limestone rim, as it overlooks incredible geologic formations, that seem to form a grand staircase down to the inner plateaus, and Black Granite Gorge of the Colorado River.
An immense formation, known as Newton Butte reaches far out from our lofty perch on the rim. Its layer of Redwall Limestone, some 500 feet thick, has unreal curves, as eons of time have shaped it. It seems to point us to, two other large formations halfway across the Canyon named, Angels Gate and Hewitt Butte, which are shrouded with cloud shade at the far right of the painting. Behind them is part of Wotan’s Throne on the distant North Rim.
Opposite to the left, is sunlit Zoroaster and Brahma Temples. Two of the most photographed and painted areas from the South Rim. The distant North Rim, features places like Thor Temple, Obi Point, and Cape Royal, too many features to name, but I fell in love with this viewpoint named Shoshone Point.
Doing a painting like this, is long and at times tedious, but the reward of the finished work is so worth it. It is also very SOLITARY, just me, music, the easel, and my art studio. So, when a far away, wonderful friend from Scandinavia, allowed me to share photos of its day by day progress, well, it is very motivating. Reading her positive and encouraging emails helped me be determined to make day to day progress.
This effort involved five weeks of work, including a custom made rustic frame, made out of Ghost Wood, in tribute to Grand Canyon Architect, Mary Jane Colter. She designed many of the famous rustic buildings including the Desert View Watchtower. I desire my paintings of this place, to appear as if looking out of a window of one of her buildings!
Shoshone Point is not on any maps, nor are there signs. It is a mile walk from a dirt parking lot, with few, if any cars. It offers fantastic views in every direction. Solitude at its very best! It does feature picnic tables and public facilities. It also can be reserved for special occasions and weddings. Maybe a couple that got married there will discover this art and make it part of their home and memories someday.
It is one of my favorite viewpoints along the South Rim, of the Grandest Canyon on earth!

Paying a revisit to this bold, magnificent work of art. I never realized it was an extension of the same scene from "Approaching Shoshone," a gem in its own right. One can feel the power of the approaching storm. The detail in the shadows, play of light and color, and overall sense of "being" in this spot are certainly transcendental. You have inspired me to add Shoshone Point a "must visit" list when the opportunity presents itself. One of your finest, Jerry!
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Thank you so much, Chance. I appreciate everything you had to say about this. When you go I know you’ll love Shoshone. This view is just east of the last picnic table. Just make sure that someone has not booked it for a wedding or special event.
