Sonoran Poppy Splendor
Artist
Jerry Bokowski
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas Board
Description
On March 9, Janet and I traveled to the Arizona Picacho Peak State Park, to see the Spring Poppy display.
I brought my plein air easel and set up at a small amphitheater there to paint this scene. My goal was to get the sky, peaks, and desert established in about an hour or so. I then completed the painting in my studio by adding details and the flower blooms. Outdoor painting is fun and rewarding. It sharpens my drawing and compositional skills, as well as speed and color mixing and matching, values, and hues. Many times I try to capture the feeling and look of being there that very day!

I love your small works of art, honing in on some aspect of the Arizona Sonoran Desert flora, set against a famous landmark. I love your story behind the artwork, hence share it, "I brought my plein air easel and set up at a small amphitheater there to paint this scene. Many times I try to capture the feeling and look of being there that very day!" You certainly did capture the feeling of that day. LF FB Janet💕
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Painting outdoors with my fast dry acrylics is challenging too, Janet. I was planning on doing more outdoor plein air works while the weather is perfect for it in southern Arizona, but because of Covid, we’re staying home. Studio paintings are occupying my time these days. Thank you so much for your enthusiastic comments. They are always appreciated!

Beautiful impression of a sunny day, Jerry. Looks very happy, and a nice, happy escape from the ills of our current time!
Jerry Bokowski replied:
It was an escape, but things are going from bad to worse. So we’ll stay home and CREATE. Thank you very much as always for your visits, comments, and support!

Now that I am officially retired, I may have to try this, Jerry. Beautiful composition and color palette! L/F

Painting outdoors can be fun, Scott. Still, I am mostly a studio brat. Thank you very much!
