Description
In August of 2017, Janet and I went to Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park. I made a point of finding this view during late afternoon from Hopi Point. I had always wanted to do a painting that featured several of the famous temples and formations. A panorama of sorts.
As I looked through my Nikon Camera viewfinder I could not see near as wide as I wanted to even at 18mm. So I had to take two images and splice them together for the view we see here for reference.
On the far side of the Colorado River, from left to right, we see Isis Temple, Cheops Pyramid, Buddha Temple, Brahma Temple, Zoroaster Temple, Wotan’s Throne, Vishnu Temple, and the Desert View cliffs on the far horizon. It is a 28 mile drive to the Watchtower Desert View Point.
This side of the Colorado River gorge, we see from left to right, Dana Butte, a huge red limestone formation named The Battleship, and sunlit Oneill Butte and Cedar Ridge to the upper right.
The rocky edge in the foreground includes natural potholes filled with dirt, sand and gravel. This makes for a potentially hazardous situation for falls especially when tourists want to stand on the edge to take a selfie while wearing flip flops. Being on the edge of Grand Canyon and experiencing a view like this is breathtaking and beyond words. A distant summer monsoon clouds and rain just add to the beauty. I love this place!
I am offering another version of this painting, as a print, that was shot in warm light, that shows more of an intense golden hour look.

paying another revisit to this beautiful painting! Love the warm tones and gentle, glowing light upon the landscape. Just awesome
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Thank you so much, Chance. I remember moving this to a different spot in my studio so that we could view it from the proper distance. It does look very good from 10 feet away!

Annalisa Rivera
When I visited the Grand Canyon, I too found that I couldn't adequately capture all that I could see with my eyes - it's an incredible place. I love how you've captured the color and all that detail - really impressive work!
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Thank you so much, Annalisa. Once you have been to GC, you can appreciate the challenge to photograph or paint it. It is just so vast that only a small part of it can be captured at a time.
Chance Kafka
Paying a revisit to this beauty. How striking out looks in person, with all the Grand detail and light play!
Jerry Bokowski replied:
I find it amazing that the way a painting is lit and presented, distance from viewing, can make so much difference in how it looks. Thanks Chance for help in moving big paintings to verify that fact!
Laurel Adams
Jerry, always MASTERFUL! I thought for a brief moment this was a photograph...SPECTACULAR!
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Thank you very much, Laurel. These modern times it seems fewer people are drawn to realism. The fast food generation seems to be more in favor of fast art. I paint only that once it is done I can think, Wow, did I do that? Thank you very much!
Debra Banks
This is incredibly beautiful Jerry, the play with the shadows and the golden light is wonderful!
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Grand Canyon is an incredible challenge so thank you very much for your kind words on this, Debra!
