Description
Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park (USA), is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World and its vastness humbles the artist and photographer. Four miles from the national park boundary, Desert View offers the first glimpse of the Grand Canyon for those of us who have arrived from the east, that would be me and my wife.
Standing on the observation deck of the Desert View Watchtower, visitors to Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park, we can view eastern portions of the Grand Canyon, as well as looking west.
Prominently featured, is the white-topped Escalante Butte. A summit that has been photographed by hundreds of people (my wife, Janet, included) every day at Desert View from Mary Colter’s masterpiece “Desert View Watchtower,” with no one ever knowing its name. The far butte to the right is, Cardenas Butte.
Escalante Butte contains a Coconino Sandstone layer of jumbled white boulders on its top, imagery shared by those who have hiked to the top, confirms this. It is as though they were strategically placed there.
What makes Escalante Butte so special it is just high enough to break into the layer of white boulders of Coconino Sandstone as the summit, while Cardenas's lower summit is red blocks of Supai sandstone, making the two adjacent summits very different. The small butte in between, is affectionately known as Escaldenas Butte (the so-called lovechild).
Add a big, bull elk to the scene, and you behold creation at its best.
I wanted to show an approaching storm from the southwest with lots of cloud shadows.
So much of the surrounding canyon is in cloud shade. In the distance we can see Vishnu Temple. Beyond it , looking closely, distant Angels Gate and Isis Temple can be seen.
Painting this is epic for me as there is so much to keep track of and render. That said, it looks as if we are seeing this view from a window of the Desert View Watchtower.

I totally agree with you Jerry, that "Euphoric Escalante Butte," looks as if we are seeing this view, from a window of the Desert View Watchtower, Mary Colter's Masterpiece! I had the pleasure to photograph this area, standing on the observation deck. This area is now closed for the time being. I am so glad we can still enjoy it through your art. I just love your clouds in your Grand Canyon paintings. Bravo for this GRANDeur! LF and FB

Jerry, fantastic rendition of this challenging and dynamic landscape. Love the bold light on the buttes and temples, the glimpse of the Colorado River, and soft clouds including the moody storm clouds to the southwest. Beautiful depth and detail. I watched a sunset over this very landscape from my trip there in 2018 and instantly recognized it. Great work!
Jerry Bokowski replied:
The more one visits the canyon, photographs it, paints it, the more you come to love its diverse grandeur. Thank you very much, Chance!

Jerry, this work is simply magnificent! You so finely depicted this fabulous view as seen from the window of the desert View Watchtower. Now that I saw the video of Watchtower I picture all much better. :) I am always blown away by how masterfully you render the depth in your landscapes. Just love this work! LF!
