Description
I was on my way back to Tucson from Sierra Vista after visiting my parents, and I decided to go through Sonoita on the way back. The high, rolling grasslands of Sonoita were green from the summer rains. The terrain here is so different from the Tucson desert just a half an hour or so away. Nearby is the famous Empire Ranch where in the late 1800s was one of the largest cattle ranches in the country owned by Walter L. Vail. My home in Vail, Arizona, was named after him. When he began he had help from investors John Harvey and Herbert Hislop, both of whom were from England. Today, streets in my neighborhood are named after the Englishmen. I intend to do some paintings of the Empire Ranch house as well as the countryside that surrounded it. This is Arizona cattle and wine country at its best. The rain clouds are so low you can almost reach out and touch them as the wind blew them right on by. I remember seeing a rancher (cowboy) wearing a raincoat and checking up on his Brahma bull, with rain and Mt. Wrightson of the Santa Rita Mountains in the background, and I just had to capture the moment on canvas. The famous Steak Out Restaurant is just a few minutes away as well as award winning Wineries and Vineyards.

Love the simplicity here, looks like a watercolor with a minimal pallet...

Beautiful depiction of this high country. Love the mist and atmosphere. It is definitely a different world only half hour away from the Tucson metropolis. This area too reminds me of Wyoming! Very interesting back story in your description as well.
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Sonoita, Elgin, Patagonia, and Empire Ranch are very special to us, Chance. Especially during monsoon season in August. Thank you very much as always!
