Description
The Las Cienegas National Conservation Area is home to famous Empire Ranch, the high desert grasslands of southern Arizona, and home of Pronghorn Antelopes.
Once facing an uncertain future that almost certainly included housing and commercial development, today more than 45,000 acres of rolling grasslands and woodlands are protected as a National Conservation Area. Lush riparian corridors form the life blood of the NCA. It is surrounded by mountain ranges often called SKY ISLANDS. To North are the Rincon mountains, to the east are the Whetstone and Mustang Mountains. To the southeast we can see the Huachuca Mountains and to the west, the Santa Rita Mountains. In this painting we see a male and female Pronghorn Antelopes, ears always alert for danger. The dry desert grasslands are finally going to get some summer rains as clouds build up over the mountains and provide patchy shade as we see here. Soon it will turn green. To the upper left are the Mustang Mountains and to the upper right, we see the distant Huachuca ( Thunder ) Mountains that rise to over 9,400 feet above sea level. Efforts have been made to clear the grasslands of Mesquite trees that have proliferated in order to preserve the grasslands. Cattle also share this ranch country. This area is just 20 miles from my home in Vail. I love the wide open country that looks much as it did in the 1880s when Walter and Margaret Vail owned Empire Ranch. I love the grasslands of this area. It reminds me much of Wyoming - Having been to the Grand Canyon, San Francisco Peaks, Mogollon Rim, Superstition Mountains, and all over the greater Tucson Area, this region is among my favorites. Beautifully done, and featured in Tucson and Southern Arizona.

You should visit Empire Ranch and Las Cienegas Reserve soon. It is about 25 minutes south of I-10 on the Sonoita Freeway. We often spot these critters. Thank you for your comments on this Chance!

This is great Jerry, and I loved reading about it too. It makes me sad that animals keep loosing ground as people take over. It must be an awesome sight to see a place that looks as it did so long ago. Great light and shadow and beautiful animals! l/f
