Description
**This was painted for the Tohono Chul Park annual 10 x 10 Fundraiser. "An Invitational Exhibition of small works by the artists who have made the exhibits at Tohono Chul shine throughout the last year." Sold in that show. **
As you look toward the Santa Catalina Mountains from metropolitan Tucson, Arizona, one of the most distinctive landmarks on the Pusch Ridge skyline, resembles a closed hand with the index finger extended to make a #1 sign. This is Finger Rock, a 100 foot high formation that marks the steep canyon that bears its name. Finger Rock Canyon offers one of the most direct routes into the Catalina Front Range with its spectacular views and steep formations.
I have loved Finger Rock, since I was 6 years old. So it is the featured mountain peak to serve as a background for these spring Hedgehog Cactus blooms. This is a Quail's eye view of these small cacti, that amaze all who see them with their magnificent magenta blooms. A large Saguaro is also blooming, our state flower. I decided on a sky that would evoke the day's end, sunset approaching dusk. Such a moody time of day!

Paying a revisit to this small, highly effective painting Jerry. You have perfectly conveyed the misty warm aura of sunset at the end of a great day in the desert. Your creative juices really flowed with this small series!

I like your technique of overemphasizing the flowers in the foreground, it is beautiful and effective. The patterns formed by the star- like spikes on the flowering cactus in front, and in the bushes and cacti in the various layers beyond add yet another fun dimension. like/f
