Description
Back in 2005, Janet and I visited Canyon de Chelly ( pronounced: da Shay ). While the entire area is breath taking, famous Spider Rock was the most impressive formation for us to see. It rises 800 feet high. Centuries before Stan Lee, of Marvel Comic book fame, created the Super Hero he named Spider Man, the Dine/Navajo native Americans lived here in the canyon. To this day, their ancient homes built in caves on the vertical cliffs, high off the valley floor still exist. One of the most famous cliff dwelling is called the White House Ruins.
Among their deities were Spider Man and Spider Woman. They believed the Spider Woman lived on top of Spider Rock and named it after her. In this painting we see a Bald Eagle soaring effortlessly on the thermals that rise from the canyon. As the sun is about to set, much of the canyon is in shadows and the late day light showcases the vivid layered colors in the canyon walls. Distant clouds bring much needed rain to this arid land. Navajo Americans still live in the valley as well in a small town called Chinle just minutes away. This is north eastern Arizona at its best!

Jerry, you are truly a phenomenal artist, and your work gives me inspiration to create more landscapes! I love your use of colors, and your composition of light, and shadow really bring life to your paintings not to mention all the detail you've incorporated into the canyons. The bald eagle really completes your piece! Simply Gorgeous!
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Thank you so much, Annette. Love to hear that you are inspired to paint more landscapes. Decades ago, I learned to incorperate what’s called, “atmospheric perspective” in my work. It is something artists can do that cameras are limited to. I used to love to stare at work by artists like Albert Bierstadt and his use of atmosphere to create miles of depth in his large scale landscapes!

Jerry Bokowski replied:
Yes that shadow...I knew it had to be there but I needed to execute it just right and make it transparent. Fortunately, it came out just right. Thank you so much, Evelyn!
