Description
Two Elf Owls have flown in from Southern Mexico. They migrate to Southern Arizona in Spring and stay through the Summer. They make their homes in abandoned Woodpecker cavities in Saguaro Cacti. In the background we see Picacho Peak silhouetted by a full moon. This is part of a State Park renowned for Spring wildflowers and even the Saguaros are in bloom. Elf Owls are about the size of a common Sparrow. They usually have three eggs that they incubate for three weeks. The owlets grow fast and are fledglings ready to go off on their own in 10 weeks or so. This painting was inspired by FAA Photographer Heather King and her love for owls.

Congratulations on your feature in the Fine Art America Group "Images That Excite You!"

Re-visiting this dear Jerry, to promote it in Beauty Of Arizona discussion thread, "NATIVE Plants of ARIZONA!" The Saguaro Cactus provides a place for different native birds to nest. Many of these cavities are made by the Gila woodpecker, which after abandoning their nest, they are used by other birds, such as the elf owls. This is just such a precious piece of work. You have the best night scenes. Well done! LF FB

This is such a MARVELoUS painting, Jerry! Has always been a favorite of mine. I can't believe I have not commented on it before now. I love how enthusiastic Heather King is about this. Congratulations for the 2nd Place CONTEST WIN, "Arizona Nights!" This truly showcases why I love the beauty of Arizona so much. So unique and diverse, home the beautiful Sonoran Desert. Picacho Peak during a full moon, creates such a stunning piece, featuring these precious little darlings, elf owls. Hence why the gila woodpecker is protected, as they create these cavities in the Saguaro Cactus, called a "boot," for their nests, and then are later used by other native birds. A night scene is perfect for the saguaro during a springtime scene, as they open at night. I just can't say enough about this fabulous painting. LF and FB

Wonderful, so darn cute, and I really enjoy that you gave them a beautiful home with flowers, minus the little prickly stickers on the cactus. :) I really like how you managed to create a dusky scene behind them and around the mountains, wonderful work!!! L/F
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Thank you very much, Debra. This is the most common home for these little owls in Southern Arizona.
Dominique Fortier
This is absolutely charming. I've been travelling in Arizona a couple of years ago, and what impressed me srongly was the huge saguaro/sahuaro like candles or guardians in the desert. Plus I didn't know that they had those big great white flowers that you drawn so well. I realized that the desert is full of a wonderful life. l/f
