Description
As much as I love Utah's Zion National Park, and as many times as I have been there over the past 28 years, I never knew about this place, aptly named CASCADE FALLS. You see, it took a friend from Macedonia, who has never been to Zion, to tell me about these fabulous falls. Maybe the fact that her background in geology is what led her to discover these falls with a unique water source in the first place.
The waters burst forth from the base of these cliffs. An ancient lava tube acts as an underground pipeline that drains Navajo Lake almost two miles away. These waters form the beginning of the North Fork of the Virgin River that flows through Zion National Park.
So after she told me of her desire and passion to see this place in person someday, I decided to do some research and found a photo posted by the Dixie National Forest Service that I felt was perfect as a reference for this painting As I painted this, I thought of the awesome sound that this rush of white water would make. Nature's majestic music. I reflected on the visual impact of the brilliant hues of orange sandstone cliffs contrasted against the vibrant blue Utah sky. I could feel the canyon scented breeze in my face that provides an olfactory delight. Observing the afternoon sun as it cast its brilliant light and shadow contrasts.
So this painting was inspired by, and dedicated to, my friend in Macedonia. I hope that she can see it in person someday. Stand on that view point railing and see the distant West Temple of Zion as she loves this place more than some people that have been there.
