Description
This painting has been donated to the Empire Ranch Foundation.
"Almost Home To Empire Ranch," is a painting that features a fully loaded wagon and six horse team, making their way back to the Empire Ranch, during the late 1880s. They have about eight miles to go. Needed supplies were purchased in Tucson. Anyone that had to make the trip would often say, A DAY THERE and a DAY AND A HALF BACK. Nearly a fifty mile trip from the Ranch at an elevation of over 4,000 feet to Tucson at around 2,000 feet. So almost all uphill while fully loaded on the way back. Here the high desert grasslands transition from prickly pear cactus and Ocotillo to scrub oak, and Manzanita as the rolling hills transition into the Empire Mountains and Santa Rita Mountain foothills. The driver of this wagon works for the Vail family that founded Empire Ranch. These people had few if any creature comforts and hard work was in order every day.
This view can be seen from milepost 44 on Highway 83. Yesterday, on May 25th, I was honored by a visit from Faith Boice to see my studio and art. She currently serves as the President of the Empire Ranch Foundation whose goal is to restore the Historic Ranch. Her family owned the ranch from 1928 until the mid 1970s. She has a passion for the home that once belonged to her family and works hard to promote events that raise funds for restoration.

An incredible representation of days gone by Jerry, one that causes my heart to reflect on times past and wishing that some things never changed! LF
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Even today when we visit the ranch we are in awe of the wide open cowboy country, Malanda. I can feel the history of the Wild West. I even live on a street named after one of the founders of Empire Ranch. Thank you so much for your nice words!

What a generous gift. Such a beautiful capture. I love those rolling hills of that area in southern Arizona so unique and special.
Jerry Bokowski replied:
The Empire Ranch Foundation works hard to restore this famous ranch just 25 minutes from our home in Vail, Missy. I'm just trying to help out a little. Thank you so much for stopping by and taking your time to comnent!

Jerry ...t his is such an amazing work of art ... so much feeling and beauty ... glorious in every way. I totally enjoyed reading your description ... and something in my soul really responded to the "day there and a day and a half back" because of the loaded wagon and trip back up in elevation. Things that we never think about in these times, had to be factored in and considered all the time back in the day. A wonderful sweeping tribute to a place and to a time ... as always, breathtaking work!!!!! l/f and t
